Young volunteers

A. Leo
I help at an animal shelter every weekend. I clean the animals’ living areas and take the dogs for walks. It’s hard work, especially when the weather is bad, but I enjoy being with animals. I hope to become a vet one day, so this is good experience for me. I have also met a few other teenagers there – we sometimes go for a snack after we finish.

B. Hannah
I do volunteer work at a library near my school. I help people find books and use the computers. At first, I didn’t know much about the system, but the staff were very helpful. Now, I feel more confident. I don’t think I will do this forever, but I have learned a lot. I might try something else next year, like helping in a hospital.

C. Maya
I started visiting an elderly neighbour twice a week to keep her company. We usually chat or watch TV together. Sometimes I help her cook or go shopping with her. I didn’t think I’d enjoy it, but now I look forward to it. It’s made me more patient and a better listener. I think volunteering has really helped me grow as a person.

A Day at the Science Museum

Tom’s class went to the city’s science museum last Tuesday. It was a school trip to learn about technology and inventions. Tom had never been there before, so he was very excited. When they arrived, the museum guide gave them a quick tour and then they watched a short film about famous inventors. After that, the students had time to explore the exhibits on their own.

Tom’s favourite part was the space section. He learned about planets, stars, and astronauts. He also got to try a space suit and take pictures in it. In another part of the museum, there were machines that showed how electricity works. Tom and his friends tried pressing buttons and pulling levers to make lights and sounds. It was fun and interesting.

Later, they went to the café and had sandwiches and juice. Tom bought a small robot keyring from the museum shop for his little brother. On the way back to school, Tom felt tired but happy. He said he wanted to visit the museum again with his family.

14. Why did Tom go to the science museum?

15. What did the guide do at the start of the visit?

16. What did Tom enjoy most?

17. What did Tom buy at the shop?

18. How did Tom feel at the end of the trip?
